Since January 2024, the Cultural Heritage Institute, a public body, has been responsible for the guardianship of 110 properties scattered throughout mainland Portugal, including archaeological sites, castles, fortifications, cathedrals, churches, monasteries, and others. But we have many other objectives, such as complying with legislation regarding the protection of the cultural heritage of thousands of archaeological sites and properties with national classification. We ensure the inventory and research of immovable, movable, tangible and intangible assets and guarantee respect for the harmony and safety of the areas surrounding the classified properties. We rely on the work of highly qualified and specialized technicians in the areas of archives and libraries, research laboratories in archaeosciences and underwater archaeology.
